Tips for Maintaining Your Dental Health During the Holidays

Posted by Dr. Bird on Dec 3 2021, 04:13 AM

Keeping your teeth healthy during the holidays when you are met with tempting treats at every corner may require some effort. But it will be well worth it!

Although it is a busy period, with little time to spare for your health and well-being, a little careful planning will get you through the holidays with healthy teeth.

Here are a few pointers our dedicated team at Paradise Family Dental in West Richland, Washington, have put together to help keep your mouth and teeth healthy during the holidays.

  • Maintain Your Regular Routine

The hustle and bustle of the holidays can disrupt your routine. However, it's critical that you maintain your daily oral health regimen no matter what. So, make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day and don’t forget to floss each day too.

  • Avoid Consuming Sugary Foods (Or at Least Limit Your Consumption)

With so many mouth-watering desserts and snacks available around Christmas, it's tough to resist the temptation of indulging in these delightful treats that are only accessible once a year.

You should, however, avoid sugary foods as much as you can because they are terrible for your teeth and gums. If you do eat sweets, limit your intake and brush and floss afterward.

  • Drink a Lot of Water

Water is beneficial to your health, but especially to your teeth and mouth. Drinking water (particularly fluoridated water) keeps your mouth clean, strengthens your teeth, fights against the effects of dry mouth and bad breath, and keeps you hydrated. It also contains no calories or sugar, making it an ideal beverage for holiday feasts.

  • Avoid Smoking and Drinking

Smoking impairs your immune system and increases the production of bacterial plaque that causes gum disease. Meanwhile, alcohol reduces saliva production and causes your mouth to dry out. Therefore, avoid drinking and smoking even if it’s something you only do occasionally.

  • Don't Forget to Visit Your Dentist

We understand that the holiday season is extremely hectic and that it can be difficult to maintain a normal schedule once December begins. However, you should not postpone your regular visit to the dentist if you are due for a teeth cleaning, preventive dental care exam, or general or preventative dentistry procedures.
