Here Are 6 Foods That Are Bad for Your Teeth

Posted by Dr. Bird on Feb 7 2022, 08:40 AM

Plaque formation is the main cause of oral infections and gum disease. The bacteria in plaque produce acids after you eat or drink anything. These acids break down your enamel and pave the way for tooth decay.

To maintain good oral health, you don’t just need to clean your teeth, but also limit the consumption of foods that cause plaque accumulation.

Here is a list of 6 foods you should avoid if you want to prevent dental problems compiled by our team at Paradise Family Dental in West Richland, WA:

  • Sugary Foods

These foods are an oral health nightmare. The bacteria in plaque use the sugar content for energy and release acids in the process. This progresses to systematic tooth decay.

Besides the usual suspects like chocolate, biscuits, and pies, you need to also limit your consumption of other supposedly healthy yet sugary foods and drinks like breakfast cereals and juices.

  • Sticky Foods

Sticky foods are very harmful especially for people who have loose teeth or fillings.  These foods settle between your teeth and hasten tooth decay. Sticky foods you should avoid include dry fruits especially dates & raisins, caramel, and licorice.

  • Citrus Fruits

There’s nothing like a slice of sweet orange or grapefruit on a summer day. They aren’t just delicious but also have a lot of health benefits. However, consuming too many citrus fruits may lead to the erosion of your enamel. This happens because of the high acid content in these fruits, which leads to tooth sensitivity and staining.

  • Hard Foods

Some foods can crack and damage your teeth. These include everyday snacks that we all munch on such as hard candies and popcorn. Due to their hard outer surface, they can chip, break, or fracture your teeth.

  • Foods That Cause Dry Mouth

Your saliva is your best defense against tooth decay. It prevents foods from sticking to your teeth and forming plaque. So, it becomes essential to limit the consumption of foods that may cause dry mouth. Some of these foods include salty crackers, dry meats, and peanuts.

  • Pigmented Foods

From tomato and soy-based sauces to curries, berries, and beets, pigmented foods discolor your teeth. Stained and yellowed teeth are not aesthetically pleasing and dampen your confidence each time you smile or talk.
